Prayers for Bobby & Mothers

There are a lot of things happening yesterday (6 April 2010). I managed to pack all my stuffs and sent it to 3 different “friends” for them to keep it for me during the long semester break. I have been doing this since the past two years because I do not trust my school store room keeper. Then I get home for a few days before working in KL again.

Ok. The topic now is
Prayers For Bobby. It is a movie made last year for a TV station. I downloaded for quite a long time before I managed to watch it during the exam week and few times after that. All I can say that it is a fantastic movie, great storyline, fabulous line up of actors, full of meaningful messages and a touching ending. Sigourney Weaver is amazing!!

The movie is about Bobby, a smart, kind and somehow confused about his sexuality living with his loving Christian devoted happy family when he discovered himself gay. He had a girlfriend but the relationship did not worked out when he feels awkward about kissing a girl. Once he told his elder brother about his confusion and later the whole family knows it. His mother, Mary worked very hard to cure his son “
sickness” by sending him to meet with a psychiatrist, attend the church meeting and even stick small notes of verses in the Bible in the bedroom, TV, bathroom, kitchen and on the night stand!

Mary tried every thing she could think of in order to heal Bobby from being a sinner as she was afraid that they will not be a family again in the afterlife”. Bobby left home and moved up to
Portland, Oregon to stay with his cousin, Jeanette when he argued with his mother about
“accept me as I am or forget”. On the same time, he met David, a young, handsome and successful man which became his partner. After a few months, due to pressure from his mother, Bobby killed himself by jumping off the bridge and killed by an 18 wheels truck.

But the story did not just stopped there. Mary started to find answer for his son sickness when he found the journal written by Bobby in his stuffs. Soon after that, she found and satisfied what she need to know and calm enough to accept the fact that Bobby is gay. She consulted with Reverend Joseph, a priest who are concern with the gay community and run the
Metropolitan Community Church. She even volunteered for PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) and often stands up for gay right issue.

Trivia:

  • When Bobby went to Portland for two months, he sent his mother a book called “Now That You Know, What Every Parent Should Know About Homosexuality”

  • On Bobby’s birthday, his mother sent him a present consist of a sweater and a brochure, AIDS The Wrath of God

PS: I wonder if there is anyone who are like Reverend Joseph but the Muslim version in
Malaysia? Or at least a centre like Metropolitan Community Church? ;)

After watching this movie, I realised one thing. It is never easy to be a mother, especially a good one. They will do anything just to make sure that their children is safe and protected. To all mothers in the entire universe, a special announcement for you:

I heart you very much Mama!!!
